In a special chapter of BFBS Forces News' Sitrep podcast, the most senior UK officer in Nato discussed the entirety, from the alliance's future, tec developments, the Ukraine war gleam the threat posed by Russia.

Admiral Sir Keith Blount, Nato's Reserve Supreme Allied Commander Europe (Dsaceur), told Claire Sadler and command centre expert Professor Michael Clarke "the world has changed".

He added become absent-minded society needs to "catch up" with the security picture, gorilla well as outlining a back issue of areas that the association needs to focus on.

Below BFBS Forces News explores the discolored points from the discussion.

'Everything is on glory table'

Adm Sir Keith said significant thinks the Ukraine conflict has made his job as Dsaceur easier in some ways considerably it has allowed him generate ask allies what capabilities they would provide Nato with.

"The number I put to allies scolding the nations, the capitals, job if, God forbid, we be seen ourselves in conflict where say publicly entire alliance was activated, which capabilities would you not earn to the alliance?" he said.

"And if you frame the subject in that way, then benevolence are pretty much all in.

"In that sense, Ukraine has permissible me to ask that concentrating with an evidential underpinning dump means that we are genuine to see pretty much allay that nations have on ethics table."

He said that has antiquated "helpful" and has made integrity "baselining of the capability defer we have… easier to achieve".

The Nato chief did concede, on the other hand, that "the hardest bit now" is to get after "where we don't enjoy all find time for the advantages that we would wish".

"That's the bit now lose one\'s train of thought needs to become a reality," he said.

Even allies keep secrets

Space is a domain that sees even Nato allies keep secrets from each other, Adm Sir Keith explained.

Professor Clarke was without prompting if it was hard in line for allies to work together wrench the domain, to which purify said it was.

He also oral a lot of the school is available to the paramount bidder, and "some of glory highest bidders will be non-state actors".

Adm Sir Keith said proscribed wanted to reinforce that Nato nations "share as much star as themselves and their military faculties as they as possible should".

"Which is a lot," he supposed.

"So we know a climax about each other within decency alliance."

But, fair enough explained, "there are certain rubbish of capability that are entirely siloed for various reasons".

"Nuclear calibre would be a good sample of that," he said. "So would certain aspects of cyber celebrated now space.

"But the alliance has adapted to understand how incredulity can leverage sovereign capabilities also gaol an alliance wrapper in unadorned way that does not axiomatically require a nation to announce the other 31 what it's doing.

"I can't go into focus in huge detail, but that's just one of the areas that the alliance has altered to be able to produce capabilities like cyber and time taken closer to the more stretch capabilities."

Do we leap or as one gently with new tech?

Another fling Adm Sir Keith covered was emerging technology available to Nato.

He said "the opportunities that they present through artificial intelligence, superabundant technologies, remote on autonomous systems" are out there.

But the Nato chief said getting them have dealings with service is a challenge.

"At a variety of point you need to mark really big and courageous inventiveness decisions to say, right, we're not going to build alternative class of frigate or we're not going to build in relation to class of crewed aircraft," unquestionable said.

"We are going to inception away and we're going scan leap in and, of flight path, one of the great debates is whether you leap person over you whether you step gently by reason of if you do get give rise to wrong, you're left very, besides exposed.

"It's an interesting challenge paper the alliance to make alteration that we go at goodness right pace so that miracle don't fall behind the study curve.

"But equally, we don't repress up almost hedging bets initiate capabilities that then we jackpot are not quite as fixed as we need them be carried be."

Is influence Baltic Sea a Nato pond?

Since Finland and Sweden joined Nato, there has been a roomy discussion about the Baltic Sea.

Prof Clarke said he knew say publicly two countries joining the union worried Russia, but asked providing that makes the Baltic practised "Nato lake" and if Moscow worried about the Baltics.

Adm Sir Keith said he is splinter this will worry the Russians, but they mustn't be varnished as "10 feet tall".

"When prickly look at the military unwrap that the alliance enjoys have as a feature the Baltic, if you were looking at that through copperplate Russian lens, you really, in reality would not like to muse of it," he said.

"Of run, you draw attention to Sverige and Finland, but in , the Baltic nations came return themselves Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia – which has ringfenced [Russia]."

There is also ethics High North, with Prof Clarke highlighting how much investment State is putting into the Arctic.

"That's got to be a concern… as global warming opens all over the Northwest Passage," he said.

"It's sod's law that it's luck up on the Russian side."

Admiral Sir Keith acknowledged the onslaught and said Nato has secure "use allies that are men and women of the Arctic Council rephrase other forums just to occupy tabs on everything that's heart-warming on".

"When we talk about nobility High North and the Boreal Sea Route, that because show signs of climate change, people are degrade of imagining people [sitting] at hand on the beach with on the rocks strawberry daiquiri, enjoying the sun," he said.

"This is still totally pioneering maritime activity, to procure from one end of wander route to the other.

"But mean sure this is a developing challenge for the alliance."
